Happy International Archives Day!

Today, June 9th, 2013, marks the 6th annual International Archives Day, designed by the International Council on Archives to promote archives.  Goals include public awareness of the profession, promotion of unique and interesting archival materials, calling for improved preservation, and increasing access.  Here at the McNabb Archives, I’m still processing a backlog of material on a budget of zero dollars, so I’m afraid promotion, awareness, and accessibility are on hold for now.  However, I will make it a priority to blog more often in order to share what I’m doing, how, and why.  Someday, this little archives will be organized enough to open up for public access, and my ultimate goal is to accession community research materials.  For now, though, let’s bask in the archival pride of the Universal Declaration on Archives, which reminds us that archives “play an essential role in the development of societies by safeguarding and contributing to individual and community memory.”
